Now that the tobacco industry is under the control of the FDA, starting in September 2012, there will be new labels on cigarette packages and advertising.
Here are a the labels:
What do you think?
Are you a smoker and frustrated with the new ads? Kind of like, ‘Yeah, yeah, I know it’s bad for me. I’m doing it anyway and I don’t need a reminder every time I smoke.’?
Are you a nonsmoker and happy about the ads? Thinking maybe it cause some people to quit? Maybe even some loved ones that you are concerned about and want to quit?
I am a nonsmoker (shocker, I know), and I personally LOVE these new labels. I feel like so many smokers *know* they shouldn’t smoke and know it’s bad for them, but they just don’t think about it all that often. Or don’t have a big enough motivator to quit.
Maybe these labels will be just the motivation some people need to quit smoking!
I had to watch my grandma live on oxygen her last year of life due to emphysema from smoking, so I, for one, hope that these labels will wake some people up and cause them to quit!

wow, those are pretty intense! I'm a nonsmoker, so I can't really say if they'll convince someone to quit smoking, but hopefully it will help keep younger kids from starting.
I'm an ex-smoker and I'm not sure these would have made me quit. I quit because I wanted to be healthy so I can raise a family one day and that was my motivator. I also had a family friend pass away from cancer that was an extra motivaitng factor. The ads are good to maybe deter kids from starting smoking but may not make people quit.
This is a FANTASTIC post! My mom had a lung cancer scare last year after smoking for almost 40 years. I also had 2 uncles (my mom's brothers) die of lung cancer. I don't smoke and never have. I think it's absolutely repulsive.
These new labels would be a HUGE deterrent for me if I did smoke, though. They're gruesome and disgusting. I think it's important for people to get constant reminders about how their habits can affect them.
Wow - these are really going to be on cigarette packaging? I think that's great. If I worked for a tobacco company, I would hate it, but hey - that's why I don't work for big tabacco! I wish my mom would quit, but she gets angry if anyone even broaches the subject. :(
I'm a nonsmoker, and my grandfather lost a lung from smoking. These ads won't really affect my life. But I wonder if they will have an impact on would-be or current smokers.
I think these ads are great. They're real and people need to take advantage of the ONE life they have to live. Being educated on health risks, like cigarettes is one step closer, and sometimes a visual is more effective than words. Hopefully our government will care enough one day to remove all and every unsafe product from being available for consumer purchase.
I'm a non-smoker and I like the ads! Some people ignore the facts and do it anyway, even if it's to the detriment of others, including their children. I hope that having something so in-your-face like that will help them realize what they are doing to themselves and others.
Wish they'd put them on vaccines.
The mouth cancer ones they show to deter people from chewing tobacco always gross me out- my husband used that briefly when we were first together and I told him it was a huge turn off and I would NOT be kissing someone who had a mouth like that- and he quit.
I hope it works as intended!
I love the new ads, it's about time! But I'm a non-smpker. And knowing smokers, I don't know how effective these will be. They have that attitude... they know it's bad for them, but they do it anyway! WHY?! But maybe it'll help stop people from ever starting????
